What are We Out to Expose and Explain, with Iran Nuclear Crisis Looming?

Insight into the reasons for writing a new history of Israeli espionage — Spies Against Armageddon — can be found in this interview with Scripps-Howard News Service.

Spies Against Armageddon, israel spy, covert operations, dan raviv, yossi melman“Those seeking to understand Israel’s saber-rattling have a new piece of required reading,” writes Isaac Wolf, an investigative reporter for Scripps-Howard.  “In their rich volume, ‘Spies Against Armageddon,’ published by Levant Books, veteran reporters Dan Raviv and Yossi Melman tell the history of Israel’s intelligence community. It’s one cast from the horrors of the Holocaust and steeled by their Arab neighbors.

“Raviv, with over 30 years of experience as a CBS News correspondent, and Melman, a longtime Israeli newspaper reporter on military and intelligence issues, trace the growth of Israel’s intelligence community, showing the long-standing tension between Israel’s efforts to gain respect from American spies as it simultaneously tries to trick them.”

Very interesting and intriguing history of clandestine affairs. The victories and the failures gave a full understanding of history and the ramifications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down, September 1, 2012

This is a wonderful book detailing the origins and operations of Israel’s intelligence network. One might think this topic would be bland, however much of the text reads like a typical spy novel: exposing the failures as well as the triumphs. Some of the information may be new, some may be old, and some may be shocking. After reading this book, you will never think of intellegence gathering in the same way again.

A fascinating read with details that one wouldn’t expect to read about. The authors are clearly dealing at the highest levels of information gathering. It reads more like a novel than a history of Israel’s brilliant but sometimes ill fated intelligence work.
